How To Apply

So you're interested in "studying away"...

1.    The first step in applying for a placement through National Student Exchange (NSE) is to schedule a meeting with an OIE Coordinator.  Aside from determining your eligibility, this will give you an opportunity to discuss your academic plans, and it will give the coordinator a sense of what you are looking for in a program.  Your coordinator will give you an Advisor Form, which you must have your advisor sign prior to applying.  It is important that your "academic team" (i.e., your advisor, your department, and any other person who belongs to your academic support network) be aware of your plans, and that they support your intention to "study away."

2.   After meeting with a coordinator, you will be asked to fill out a National Student Exchange Application (below), which you will submit to our office.  Applications must be submitted by February 1st for the upcoming Fall and/or Fall - Spring semesters.  Placements are made at NSE's annual Placement Conference, which takes place in March.  Your NSE coordinator will do his or her best to place you at your first choice institution, but high site demand and other factors may make it necessary for you to accept a placement at another institution listed on your application.  As with study abroad, flexibility is important with NSE placements.

3.   Once a placement has been made, your NSE coordinator will contact you, congratulate you (!), and let you know where you have been placed.

4.   At this time, you will begin to fill out your Participant Placement Acceptance Packet, which includes a placement acceptance form, a budget worksheet, and a course approval form.

Students who wish to apply to NSE should read the NSE Student Manual thoroughly before beginning the process.
