Meet the Students!

Sustainability Internships

The Office of Sustainability offers a variety of internships throughout the year, and can include work during summer and winter breaks. Interns can earn academic credit or be paid, and positions fall into the following categories:

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy
  • Waste reduction, recycling, and resource efficiency
  • Food recovery
  • Land stewardship and conservation
  • Community garden and community health
  • Community awareness, outreach and social justice

SCSU sustainability internships are designed for students to connect their academic studies with direct experiences planning, managing, and tracking sustainability projects on campus and in local communities. Because sustainability challenges are inter- and trans-disciplinary, internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students at SCSU in any major or program of study. In the past three years, undergraduate and graduate students from the following programs have completed sustainability internships: Chemistry, Public Health, Geography, Biology, Art, English, Women's Studies, Business/ Management, Exercise Science, Psychology, and Secondary Education.

Meet the 2017 summer interns!

Kaelyn Audette
 Public Health- Campus Community Garden Manager
Public Health, minor in Psychology- Summer 2017
Kaelyn's primary responsibility is to plan, plant, and maintain the SCSU Campus Community Garden behind Davis Hall, and she helps with SCSU's food recovery efforts.  She is growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers using only organic methods, and she oversees the activities of volunteers at the garden. Kaelyn is piloting a new partnership for the Campus Community Garden with New Haven Farms and CARE. This means Kaelyn is mentoring with experienced urban farmers, installing drip irrigation, and helping CARE offer a summer community program focused on nutrition education, gardening, and improved health. SCSU donates the garden's fruits and vegetables to local soup kitchens and emergency pantries. After graduation, Kaelyn plans on continuing her education as she pursues a nursing degree.

Public Health- Recycling/ Waste Reduction Manager
B.S. Public Health- May 2017
Julie currently manages SCSU food recovery efforts, the  swapshop, and is helping prepare the fall 2017 launch of  the Thrifty Owl, a student reuse store on the lower level of North Campus Midrise. During the spring 2017 semester, Julie managed Recyclemania, a friendly competition between residence halls to reduce waste and increase recycling. After graduation, Julie plans to continue her education pursing a nursing degree. Her career goal is to become a surgical nurse. 
Nicole Charczynski
Public Health- Food Recovery, Environmental Health and Safety, Summer 2017

Nicole is piloting an internship with SCSU's Director of Environmental Health and Safety during the summer of 2017. She assists with lab safety training, attends health and safety audits, and assists with EH+S compliance projects. Nicole also helps with food recovery efforts, and recently collected and delivered over 1,800 lbs. of fresh but unserved food from Special Olympics to local soup kitchens and pantries. Finally, Nicole assists with planning a fall 2017 awareness campaign for alternative transportation and SCSU's reusable mug and water bottle initiative.
