Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: Southern invites applications from individuals who believe in the mission of public higher education and are committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship/creative activity. Successful candidates will be disciplinary scholars devoted to a student-centric approach.
The Mathematics Department is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2019. We seek candidates who are passionate about teaching statistics and data science to undergraduates. Teaching duties also include introductory-level courses in the Department of Mathematics, foundational courses in the Liberal Education Program and select upper-level and graduate courses related to area of expertise. Candidate must be committed to teaching within a vibrant/demanding public liberal arts and sciences environment and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring and research with undergraduates. All faculty at SCSU share in academic advising and participate in department/university service. Normal teaching load is 12 credit-hours per semester.
The Department of Mathematics, in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science, is developing a new major in Data Science. It is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to this effort.
Tenure-track faculty at SCSU are expected to conduct research/creative activity in their area of expertise. Creative activities include mentoring student research leading to publication of theses, publishing articles in academic and professional journals, seeking funding in support of research and teaching needs, and contributing to workshops and conferences. Active scholarship is expected and generously supported.
Required Qualifications: Qualifications include an earned doctorate in Statistics or Mathematics and the ability to teach a wide range of statistics classes at the undergraduate and master’s degree levels. All candidates must have college-level teaching experience. ABD candidates will be considered for the position only if the degree will be completed prior to the start date. Candidate’s research programs and related teaching interests must complement the department’s curriculum and mission. Applicants must have broad intellectual interests in statistics and data science education with demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with interest/experience in developing and contributing to a data science program at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels and cross-disciplinary research with other departments within the school or university.
