Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities:  Southern invites applications from individuals who believe in the mission of public higher education and are committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship/creative activity.  Successful candidates will be disciplinary scholars devoted to a student-centric approach. 

The Department of Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management seeks to fill a full-time, tenure-track position to begin August 2019. Primary responsibilities will be teaching courses in recreation management, outdoor recreation and leadership development, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in core areas of the recreation and leisure studies curriculum. Faculty are assigned a 12-credit hour load each semester.  Credit may be earned through teaching courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, supervising internships, or program coordination. Faculty are also expected to provide student advisement and engage in scholarship/creative activity, service, and professional attendance/participation in activities reflective of professional expertise.

An important goal of the Department of Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management is to effectively prepare students for managerial and/or clinical careers within the recreation, sport, and tourism industries and contribute to the societal understanding of the benefits of recreation, sport, and tourism. The department places emphasis on professional involvement and community service. Students are provided with opportunities for experiential learning that reflect current and future industry demands and the complex issues facing diverse populations with disabilities in their pursuit of quality recreation, sport, and leisure experiences.

Required Qualification:  Candidates must possess an earned doctoral degree. Candidates must also possess a minimum of one graduate degree in recreation management, outdoor recreation, or leadership development.  Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and the capacity to produce peer-reviewed scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications:  Teaching experience in college recreation courses; previous work experience in the field of recreation; demonstrated scholarship/creative activity agenda related to recreation and leadership; capacity to secure external funding; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and demonstrated effectiveness in serving diverse student populations.
