Southern Connecticut State University is seeking candidates for Residence Hall Director positions. Reporting to the Associate Director or Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Residence Hall Director is a twelve-month, full-time, live-in professional who is responsible for the supervision and management of a residence hall community. Residence Hall Directors respond to student health, safety, and conduct concerns; supervise undergraduate Resident Advisors and Welcome Desk staff; and oversee the maintenance of building facilities. Through a lens of student centeredness, Residence Hall Directors focus on community development, transitions, accessibility, and shared responsibility among students and staff. Residence Hall Directors engage in inter-departmental partnerships and oversee the delivery of transformative social and educational programs that cultivate a sense of belonging.
The successful candidate will have an ability to promote student academic success; provide effective leadership for a vibrant and diverse student body; and apply student development theories in response to student concerns, staff supervision, and student organization advisement. They will oversee the vision, maintenance, and other administrative, programmatic, and educational aspects of specific residential areas. The ideal candidates will have an understanding of and experience with residential students in the following areas: living and learning communities; academic skill development; diversity; social justice and accessibility; wellness; career preparation; sustainability; civic engagement; and personal accountability.
A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Higher Education or related field and previous successful experiences supervising university residence hall undergraduate staff is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate the flexibility and adaptability needed for a continuously evolving department; communicate a passion for making a difference in the lives of students; and be highly motivated and resourceful. Previous professional experiences providing educational and personal advisement, response to student concerns and conduct, support of student clubs and organizations, management of facilities and administrative offices, and participation in department and campus-wide initiatives are also preferred.
